..Traditional KOREAN Wedding - Jon & Salli

Wedding Day!    And would'nt you know it .. it rained all day.   But it was warm.
Mid-afternoon we took taxis to .. The Korea House.

We were greeted at the entrance and awaited our turn to be dressed in hanboks.

First, the girls went in.  Then the boys.  Enjoy some hanbok pictures :

Jon & Salli (Salli's Mom & Dad) ... before the wedding ceremony

Salli's parents and I and Jon and Ruth Ann and David stood in the greeting line as guests arrived and were introduced to each of us.   Several of Salli's friends from Japan flew in for the ceremony.   About 200 were in attendance.   We were escorted to the center courtyard for the ceremony.

Matt started the ceremony by bringing in a replica of a goose and handing it to Jon.   (Matt was the .. girukabi : best man)   Jon then presented it to his future mother-in-law.   Wild geese mate for life, so by giving the mother a goose, the groom is promising a life of love and care to the woman's daughter.   Cameron and one of Salli's nieces were the lantern bearers, escorting Jon.

all the while, musicians were playing traditional tunes :

Then Jon and Sali were brought to the center ceremony area by her attendants.

They sat across the altar from each other as the celebrant cited verse & vows :

the courtyard was ringed with guests and well wishers

What a special ceremony.   Very neat.   Afterwards, the family was escorted to a small room for the personal family ceremony.   Here's a few pic's :

Jon and Salli had a special ceremony with all the family groups.

Salli's parents and I were given a handful of two types of walnuts, one signifying a boy and the other a girl, and we tossed them into the held drapery and whatever stayed represented the number of boys and girls they'd have.

Most of the guests had been already escorted to a buffet dinner and we followed after the intimate family ceremonies.

What a selection of foods, .. octopus, duck, beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, fish, etc.   Here we are enjoying this feast :

A very special event!    A special family day.   Met many of Jon's and Salli's friends, some of whom traveled great distances.   Jon's hockey and basketball teammates, Salli's high school and college friends and workmates, and many many relatives.    Despite the rain the ceremony was beautiful.    The two wedding photographers took hundreds of pictures, of which I'm hoping to share many more with you in the future.   Congratulations Jon & Salli !!

Jessie & Marty and Carol & Jim ... you were very much missed!   We know you were here in spirit.   I hope this blog made you feel close to this special event.
